Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that individuals feel driven to perform, often in an attempt to alleviate anxiety or distress caused by these obsessions; these behaviors can significantly interfere with daily life and relationships.  Key points about OCD and related disorders:

  • Obsessions: These are intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that can be distressing and cause anxiety. Examples include fear of contamination, excessive concern about order or symmetry, unwanted thoughts of harm to oneself or others.
  • Compulsions: These are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels compelled to perform in response to an obsession, often to relieve anxiety or to prevent a feared outcome. Examples include excessive handwashing, checking locks repeatedly, counting, arranging objects in a specific way.
